Why large dogs cost significantly more

Large breeds consume 2–3x more food than small breeds, need higher doses of medications, and face expensive orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia, ACL tears, and bloat (GDV). Emergency surgery for a large breed can exceed $6,000.

Insurance is often most valuable for large breeds because their health risks are both more common and more expensive to treat. The higher premium is typically offset by the higher probability of significant claims.
